Section 2. Providing Supervision for Staff and Volunteers. The Tool Box needs your help. to remain available. Your contribution can help change lives. Engage colleagues, share ideas, and reinvent the way you work. The Tool Box needs your help. to remain available.

Your contribution can help change lives. Engage colleagues, share ideas, and reinvent the way you work. What is providing supervision for staff and volunteers? Why should you supervise staff and wild ranch, volunteers? When should you provide supervision? How do you supervise staff and volunteers? Pilar, who had once been a homeless teenager, was a counselor for homeless children. She was trying to understand why she couldn’t seem to workplace communication, connect with one particular teen-age girl, a girl who seemed a lot like Pilar herself had been at that age. She brought up the wild ranch san antonio, issue in her biweekly meeting with her supervisor. They discussed the girl, her own feelings about the siddhartha, relationship, what she had tried so far.

The supervisor suggested some techniques for using body language and other non-verbal signals to tell the girl that Pilar cared about her needs and wild, was on her side. They also talked about Pilar’s own experiences, and about how her work with this girl might be bringing up things that were difficult for Pilar to deal with At the next meeting, Pilar told her supervisor that she had tried several of the techniques they had discussed, and that she had also begun to better understand how her own feelings played into her counseling. David, Oath Horatii? All in all, she felt things had improved, and would continue to. Alejandro had been at the housing office for nearly a year, but he was still struggling to learn his job. Ranch San Antonio? He couldn’t seem to keep paperwork straight, and he had, as a result, made life difficult for D-Day Victory Essay a number of people trying to ranch, find affordable housing whose lives were difficult enough already. Furthermore, rather than apologizing when he made mistakes, he treated clients as if his errors were their fault. He and his supervisor had talked about the siddhartha brahmin, situation once before, and ranch san antonio, now the supervisor called him in again. Communication? “Your work has been unsatisfactory, and this is the second time I’ve had to tell you so,” the supervisor said. “If it continues this way, you could lose your job.” Before Alejandro could protest, the wild san antonio, supervisor continued, “Let’s look at what you’re having problems with. We should be able to come up with some ways that you can improve your performance and do your job well, and communication skills, I’ll try to ranch san antonio, help however I can. But we’ve already had this conversation twice; if we have it again, that will probably be the last time.”

Both of these scenarios are examples of supervision. In this section, we’ll discuss what supervision means, and how to go developing good supervision for staff and volunteers. What is providing supervision for staff and volunteers? When you hear the word “supervision,” you may picture a large, mean person looking over siddhartha your shoulder trying to san antonio, find fault with everything you do. There may be some supervisors who fit that description, but, in health and community service organizations, supervision is usually the opposite.

It’s helpful, and often welcomed by supervisers as a source of advice, information, and emotional support for work that can be demanding and difficult. Communication Skills? At the same time, supervisors are responsible for ranch san antonio making sure that the people they supervise are doing a good job – that they’re where they’re supposed to be when they’re supposed to and Proliferation, be there, and that the work they do is of high quality. There are really two kinds of wild ranch, supervision, often both practiced by the same person, sometimes at the same time. One puts the siddhartha, supervisor in a teacher/counselor/mentor role, providing helpful and constructive feedback, developing a good relationship with the supervisee, and working with him to continually improve his understanding of and competence in his job. The other casts the supervisor in her role in the organizational chart, as an administrator responsible for making sure that those in her department do their jobs.

The two are not necessarily contradictory, but they do occasionally place supervisors in wild ranch, an uncomfortable position, as the case of Alejandro above illustrates. The duties of a supervisor may include training new workers, supporting and workplace communication, mentoring supervisees, providing professional development, assigning and creating projects, making sure plans are being carried out effectively, providing support, assisting with projects or activities, and identifying and wild ranch, addressing unsatisfactory performance. All of these duties have the same goal: to and Proliferation Essay, help those supervised do the best job they can, and continue to learn and improve. Each of the paid staff members in your organization probably has (and should have) a job description laying out her responsibilities. Many volunteer programs also provide job descriptions for volunteers, but staff supervision and volunteer supervision are different. Staff members are expected, perhaps after some initial training, to be professionals who know their jobs and can function independently. They understand the workings of the organization, know the field, and often are expected to make complex decisions about their actions without consulting with a supervisor.

Volunteers, on ranch the other hand, are unpaid, and have chosen to help the organization for their own reasons – usually because they believe in what it’s doing, and want to have a role in it in some way. They are generally not professionals in the field, don’t necessarily know the workings of the organization (they may spend as little as an hour or two a week on their volunteer assignments), and may need a lot of ongoing guidance from david, horatii a supervisor in order to perform well. A supervisor of san antonio, volunteers may also have to Cell and Proliferation, pay more attention to logistics – scheduling, making sure everyone knows about meetings or changes, checking with people to ensure they fulfill their commitments, etc. – because volunteers aren’t tied to ranch san antonio, the organizational schedule in siddhartha brahmin, the same way employees are. Both staff members and wild ranch san antonio, volunteers should meet regularly with their supervisor. Depending on D-Day and its Victory Essay the position and the size and resources of the san antonio, organization, these supervision meetings may always be individual, or may often be in a group. In the latter case, the group can often be helpful in identifying and workplace skills, working out problems or making suggestions about resolving difficult situations. Whatever the situation, supervisors should have a chance to meet with supervisees individually at wild, least a few times a year to Cycles and Proliferation Essay, review performance, call attention to problem areas, and provide support or – where necessary – explain and try to help improve unsatisfactory work. Here’s where supervision becomes difficult. The supervisor should be an wild important source of comfort and wild ranch, help to anyone she supervises. At the same time, it usually falls to her to be the bearer of bad news when a supervisee’s job performance is, or has become, unsatisfactory. Ranch? The supervisor is expected to ranch san antonio, – and should – provide as much support as possible in that situation, helping the staff member or volunteer to bring his efforts in line with the ranch san antonio, standards of the organization.

Neither the david,, supervisor nor her supervisee can ignore the fact, however, that she may be the person who decides that – despite repeated warnings and efforts to correct the problem – performance has simply become or continued to be unacceptable, and ranch, the employee or staff member must be asked to siddhartha, leave. As must be obvious by now, supervision – which is considered an wild san antonio afterthought in many organizations – is both an important and a difficult job, one that requires a lot of thought and D-Day and its Victory, effort. That’s perhaps the most important point of this section: don’t take supervision for granted. Ranch? It can be the difference between an organization that functions smoothly and one that’s continually in crisis. Why should you supervise staff and volunteers? Good supervision benefits both the Cell Cycles Essay, individuals supervised and the organization: Supervision geared toward helping staff members and volunteers gain competency makes them feel supported and valued, and wild ranch san antonio, makes the Reality Is Not Essay, organization more competent and effective as well. Supervision can explain the requirements and responsibilities of wild ranch san antonio, staff members’ and volunteers’ positions, the methods they’re expected to use, and the organizational norms and culture, so that expectations are clear from the beginning. This can prevent problems later, or if they arise, provide a standard against which performance, behavior, and relationships can be measured. Siddhartha? Poor performance by staff or volunteers reflects poorly in the community and with fundraisers. Proper supervision can not only catch poor performance, but prevent it, by identifying areas of ranch, concern and working on them with staff and volunteers.

Adequate supervision can help to recognize and address potential problems, such as staff burnout, before they become actual problems. Good supervision keeps staff and volunteers with the organization.. It makes them feel that someone cares whether or not they do a good job, and that there’s a solid structure supporting them if they run into problems. These are factors that keep people happy with their jobs, and encourage them to stay. D-Day And Its? Good supervision models the type of relationship that should exist throughout the organization. Ranch San Antonio? Supervisors who understand their job treat all employees and volunteers with respect, focus on the professional and personal needs and development of those they supervise, and san antonio, inspire enthusiasm for ranch the work and loyalty to the organization’s vision and mission. Supervision, coupled with constructive feedback, can result in better employees who feel they are a more fully integrated part of the group. Again, the end result of this is a stronger, more effective organization. When should you provide supervision?

Supervision for new staff members and Reality Is Not Like Essay, volunteers should begin as soon as they join the organization, and should continue on a regular basis throughout their stay. Regular supervision provides the opportunity for staff and volunteers to wild san antonio, work out problems, to get to know the organization well, and to establish a good and productive relationship with their supervisor. By the same token, it allows the ranch san antonio, supervisor to get a clear picture of supervisees’ strengths and needs, to let them know how they’re doing, to help them work on areas where they’re not as strong, and to praise them for what they do well. In situations where supervision is largely supportive and professional – counseling and ranch san antonio, psychotherapy, health, etc. – the ideal is that staff members, should meet with supervisors, either in Cycles and Proliferation, a group or individually, once a week, or once every other week. (The staffs of san antonio, some medical facilities, particularly teaching hospitals, may conduct a short group supervision session every day.) With volunteers in somewhat similar positions – school or adult literacy tutors, peer counselors, hotline staffers – the wild, same might be true. For staff members and wild san antonio, volunteers whose work may not be directly with participants, but whose supervision is geared more toward making sure they understand and can do their jobs, sessions may be less frequent – monthly or quarterly. Frequency may also depend on the number of staff or volunteers a supervisor is responsible for, the flexibility of people’s schedules, and the resources of the and Proliferation, organization.

How do you supervise staff and volunteers? Although staff and volunteers both need support, the differences in their jobs, as we’ve discussed, imply differences in the ways and ranch, the frequency with which they’re supervised. In order to Cycles, ensure good supervision, it’s important to identify the right people to wild, provide it and then train them, so that they have a clear understanding of what supervision is, the aspects of it that they should attend to, and the interpersonal skills they’ll need to practice in order to do it well. Who should supervise staff members and ranch san antonio, volunteers? In general, staff members should be supervised by san antonio whoever is and Proliferation Essay ultimately responsible for the work they do. If your organization is large enough to have a number of departments, for instance, then the people in each department may be supervised by the head of that department, or the wild ranch san antonio, members of each team within the department may be supervised by that team’s leader. In smaller organizations, the director may supervise everyone else, or may share supervision duties with (or delegate them to) an assistant director and/or one or more program directors. Having the person in ranch, charge be the supervisor isn’t always the best plan, however. Remember, we explained earlier that there are two kinds of supervision.

The teacher/counselor/mentor version, which is really about professional development, requires a supervisor who has direct and successful experience in the field. Where staff members have responsibilities that involve specific professional skills – counseling or psychotherapy, teaching, medicine, wellness promotion, occupational therapy, etc. – a supervisor with knowledge of the wild san antonio, field can help them examine what they’re doing, spot and deal with areas of brahmin, potential concern, and suggest alternatives based on experience. (You wouldn’t, for wild instance, want a hospital administrator with a degree in business supervising the clinical practice of doctors. ) If your organization promotes people from ranch within, or specifically hires administrators and ranch san antonio, managers with experience in the field, this may not be an issue for you. If not, you’ll have to decide how to provide good professional supervision. Reality Like? One possibility, if administrators don’t have field experience, is wild ranch san antonio peer supervision, usually in a group. This Essay? In this circumstance, there’s no question of one person or another being in charge. Group members might rotate facilitating meetings, or might appoint one person to facilitate because she’s particularly good at it. For most people who exercise it, supervision is wild ranch only one aspect of D-Day and its Victory Essay, their jobs. It’s an ranch san antonio important enough aspect, however, that they should receive both initial and ongoing training in it.

In many fields where supervision duties are assumed – particularly counseling and clinical psychology – there are graduate courses in supervision that virtually all practitioners are expected to have taken. What should supervision training cover? Some topics that might be included in a supervision training: How to involve all volunteers and staff members effectively How to enhance the value of volunteers to D-Day and its, a program and to the paid employees How to include all volunteers and staff members in program planning and decision making How to wild ranch, evaluate performance How to provide performance feedback to workplace communication skills, volunteers and staff How to hold volunteers and staff members accountable for san antonio job performance How to help workers avoid burnout How to create a climate in which volunteers and staff will be most productive How to build teams that include both volunteers and paid employees How to minimize tension between paid staff and volunteers The difference between formative (helping the supervisee to siddhartha, improve and develop professionally through discussion, advice, and occasional counseling) and summative (judging employee performance) supervision. This might include some discussion – and perhaps role play – about ranch, what’s appropriate when, and how to siddhartha brahmin, combine the two if both are part of the supervisory role in the organization. The standard view of the supervisory relationship, as we’ve mentioned, is often negative. Supervisors are seen as overseeing and ranch san antonio, criticizing – perhaps in a hostile manner – the work of those they supervise. The reality is that effective supervision is a partnership. The supervisor provides professional and emotional support, information, advice, and a connection to the larger organization (passing on concerns, helping to obtain supplies and equipment, etc.), and Cell, supervisor and wild ranch, supervisee work on and solve problems together. For health and community service organizations, this type of supervision makes sense not only practically, but philosophically.

The supportive, partnership supervisory relationship reflects the democratic and humanistic ideals of most organizations of of the, this type, and models and promotes the sort of relationship that staff and volunteers should develop with one another and with program participants. At the same time, supervisors in most organizations have responsibilities that go beyond support and advice. They’re responsible for making sure their supervisees have the ranch, knowledge, materials, space, etc. they need to do a good job, and they’re responsible as well for making sure work gets done well and on time. That’s the practical side of supervision, and it can determine whether or not the organization reaches its goals. What does good practical supervision consist of? Welcome new staff or volunteers and distribute basic information. As soon as someone makes the siddhartha, commitment to work for your organization, whether as a staff member or volunteer, she should should receive a job description that clearly delineates her responsibilities, her place in the organizational chart, whom she will be supervised by and whom she will supervise, etc. New staff members might be sent or given a card or note signed by all staff welcoming them to wild ranch san antonio, the organization; volunteers might get a similar card thanking them for workplace joining the organization. Meet with new supervisees as soon as possible.

Supervisors should meet with a new staff member on his first day on wild the job, if possible – both to get acquainted and to get staff member’s most pressing questions answered. Part of the wild ranch san antonio, supervisor’s responsibility here might be to wild, take him around and introduce him to other staff members, to show him the D-Day and its Victory Essay, site’s facilities and procedures, and to make sure he has what he needs to start work. One of the most important functions of this meeting is to give the new staff member an ranch san antonio “anchor” – a person he feels he knows and can go to wild, for help or information in those first few nervous days on a new job. First days for wild ranch new volunteers might be different, since they’re likely to be supervised by whatever professional or staff member they’re working with, instead of, or in addition to, a volunteer coordinator. A new volunteer’s initial meeting is more likely to be with the supervising staff member, to get acquainted and to go over what the volunteer will actually do. People new to the organization should receive an orientation, either individually or in a group. Oath Of The? Because of the ways they’re recruited, it’s probably more likely that a new staff orientation will be individual (perhaps part of the initial meeting with the supervisor) and a new volunteer orientation will be in a group.

Orientation should include: The background of the organization Projects the wild san antonio, organization is currently involved in A brief introduction to other staff and volunteers, and their general responsibilities Location of supplies, equipment, and facilities Organizational culture – whether people tend to eat lunch together, for instance, how staff and Reality This Essay, volunteers interact with one another and with participants, how serious work time is expected to be, how people dress for work, etc. What kinds of wild, decisions staff and volunteers are expected to make for themselves and what they should discuss first with supervisors. Train staff and volunteers. There should be both initial and Reality Is Not Like This, ongoing training for staff and volunteers. Good training makes both staff and volunteers more confident and more competent, and helps keep the organization moving forward. Training should cover such areas as: Methods or techniques that the organization uses in wild, its work General information about the field – essential theory, new discoveries, current work, etc.

This might include visits to or from This Essay people from other organizations engaged in similar efforts. Information about the population or issue the organization is concerned with Interpersonal skills – communication, conflict resolution, problem solving, cultural sensitivity, etc. Once new staff and wild san antonio, volunteers have received their initial orientation and training, a large part of their supervisor’s job is to remain aware of what they’re engaged in, whether they’re having difficulties with it, whether they need more training in particular areas, and whether they’re actually doing what their job descriptions and the norms of the organization demand. A staff member may be struggling with one aspect of a particular project, or have a hard time relating to a particular participant. A volunteer may do a great job when she’s there, but may not always show up when she’s scheduled. These are practical supervisory concerns, and supervisors have to Reality Like, keep on top of them and intervene when necessary to make sure that the staff member or volunteer keeps doing his job. You can monitor supervisees in wild san antonio, a number of ways: Keep a file for every staff member or volunteer which includes: Progress on her assigned projects, tasks, or duties A job description (the staff member or volunteer should also have a copy) A record of volunteer hours Any written performance evaluations Records of conversations about the staff member’s or volunteer’s performance Records of any grievances filed by the volunteer or staff member Records or copies of any awards, commendations, letters of praise, etc., received by the staff member or volunteer, or by the organization on behalf of work that staff member or volunteer has done. Records of individual professional development – courses, continuing education units, conferences, etc. – by Essay the staff member or volunteer. Copies of any contracts between the wild san antonio, supervisee and the organization.

Performance evaluations should be conducted once or twice a year. And Proliferation Essay? They are important for a number of reasons. Good ones are formative, helping the staff member or volunteer to do the best job he can. They provide a record of the supervisee’s progress in his job – his professional development, what he’s learned, and what he does particularly well. They let him know that the organization cares about the job he’s doing, and that it’s important. On the san antonio, other hand, if a staff member’s work is unsatisfactory, they provide a basis for wild ranch firing him. In the U.S., at least, it’s fairly difficult to fire someone unless you have good cause. If that cause is well documented – the nature of the problem, the san antonio, number of warnings, the number and nature of attempts to correct the problem, etc. – then there’s much less threat of a lawsuit or other action by the employee.

Supervisors should at least occasionally observe supervisees’ work, if that’s appropriate. It generally isn’t appropriate for a supervisor to workplace communication skills, observe a counseling or therapy session, for instance, unless the supervisee is new to the field and still training. Even then, most supervision depends on audiotape, and informed participant permission is necessary even for that. Some teaching and counseling may be observed unannounced through a one-way mirror or on videotape, but, again, a blanket permission from san antonio particpants is necessary. Other observations – of doctors and nurses, for example – take place as a matter of course.

In many health and Reality Like This Essay, human service situations, personal observation is relatively uncomplicated, and takes place regularly. Some workplaces allow for almost constant observation, since supervisors and supervisees may occupy the wild ranch, same working space, or do the same work at the same time. Revisit the supervisee’s job description with her on a regular basis, to make sure that it accurately reflects her actual work. If not, depending on Reality This the circumstances, either the wild ranch san antonio, work should be adjusted to more closely adhere to the job description, or the job decsription should be rewritten to better describe the wild ranch, real character of the job. Talk with the supervisee’s co-workers – or in the case of san antonio, volunteers, the staff members they work with – to catch problems before they become major, and to D-Day and its Victory Essay, gather praise to offer as well.

In addition to knowing what your staff and ranch, volunteers are doing, you should be working with them as well. This includes giving them new responsibilities, and keeping communication with them open. The following tips will all help make your supervision more effective and your organization more productive. Techno-Utopianism, Counterfeit and Real (1) IV. Analysis: Comparison of the Two Strands of Techno-Utopianism. VI. Left-Wing Critiques of ranch, Mason. Too often state socialists and verticalists react dismissively to commons-based peer production and other networked, open-source visions of socialism, either failing to wild see any significant difference between them and the vulgar ’90s dotcom hucksterism of Newt Gingrich, or worse yet seeing them as a Trojan horse for the latter. There is some superficial similarity in the rhetoric and ranch san antonio, symbols used by those respective movements.

But in workplace communication skills, their essence they are very different indeed. I. Wild? Capitalist Techno-Utopianism from Cell Cycles and Proliferation Daniel Bell On. According to Nick Dyer-Witheford, capitalist techno-utopianism is “the immediate descendant of a concept of the late 1960s — postindustrial society.” And post-industrial society, in turn, was an outgrowth of Daniel Bell’s earlier “end of ideology” thesis. Postwar affluence, the institutionalization of collective bargaining, and the welfare state had banished the class conflicts of an earlier era from the scene. [Western industrial] societies presented the successful socioeconomic model toward which other experiments, including those in the “underdeveloped” and “socialist” world, would gradually converge. This was the condition of the “end of wild ranch, ideology” — which meant, in general, an end of alternatives to liberal capitalism…. [1] According to Bell, post-industrialism meant that knowledge would become “society’s central wealth-producing resource.” This change would bring with it a shift from wild ranch san antonio heavy manufacturing to the tertiary economy of services and from “manual labor to the preeminence of professional and technical work,” meaning that the dominant figures would be. scientists, engineers, and wild ranch, administrators, a new “knowledge class” lodged primarily within government and academia, bearers of the rationalist skills and virtues required by increasing organizational and technological complexity. Bell argue that the endeavors of this new class could create an siddhartha brahmin epoch of rationalized integration and ranch, prosperity, which… would finally escape from the material want, economic crisis, and class conflict of the industrial era. [2]

Knowledge would “replace both labor and capital as the main factor of production,” with the conflict between workers and capitalist being transcended by D-Day Victory an emerging new class of professionals, “based on ranch san antonio knowledge rather than property.” Capital will be transformed by technical and administrative experts, abandoning fixation with profit, becoming more socially responsible, and giving “moral issues” equal priority with balance sheets. Labor too will be transfigured. Siddhartha Brahmin? Technological development will raise living standards, automate manual toil, and thereby liquidate Marx’s subject of history — the immiserated industrial proletariat. [3] The primary enemy of wild ranch, this emerging technocratic utopia was radical politics. Rational progress — embodied in the technocratic state and wild ranch san antonio, its knowledge elite — is under siege by the irrational protest by the New Left, student revolt, affirmative action groups, and an “adversary culture.” Only if the pilotage of society is entrusted to the cadres of technical experts, scientists, engineers, and administrators will chaos be avoided and wild ranch, the dawning era safely ushered in. [4] But in fact all these beliefs could be attributed almost verbatim to the ideologists of the Progressive movement at the turn of the 20th century. Progressivism had its origins as the ideology of the managerial and and its, professional stratum which ran the new, large institutions (corporations, regulatory agencies, universities, large municipal governments, public school systems and foundations) that sprang up to dominate society in the late 19th century. The first corporate managers came from an industrial engineering background. They saw the corporation — as well as other large organizations — as something to be rationalized the same way engineers on the factory floor rationalized the production process.

According to Rakesh Khurana they sought to san antonio apply the engineer’s approach of standardizing and rationalizing tools, processes and systems to rationalizing the organization. [5] And as time passed and the kinds of organizations they headed came to be the Reality, hegemonic norm that characterized the larger society, they came to view outside society as a whole as something to be organized and managed by the same scientific principles that governed the large organization. Yehouda Shenhav described, in Manufacturing Rationality: The Engineering Foundations of the Managerial Revolution , the transfer of mechanical and industrial engineers’ understanding of wild ranch san antonio, production processes to the management of organizations, and of the managers’ understanding of organizations to society as a whole. [6] Since the difference between the physical, social, and human realms was blurred by acts of translation, society itself was conceptualized and treated as a technical system. As such, society and brahmin, organizations could, and should, be engineered as machines that are constantly being perfected.

Hence, the management of organizations (and society at large) was seen to fall within the province of ranch san antonio, engineers. Social, cultural, and political issues… could be framed and analyzed as “systems” and “subsystems” to be solved by technical means. [7] Probably the wild ranch, most important feature of Progressivism, and its closest point of wild ranch, intersection with liberal post-industrialism, was its focus on the application of disinterested expertise as transcending politics and class conflict. Of course it’s no coincidence this was the heyday of wild ranch, Taylorist “scientific management,” whose purpose was to wild ranch san antonio suppress labor conflict on the shop floor by substituting the manager’s and engineer’s expertise for the skilled worker’s direction of the work process. And according to Shenhav. [l]abor unrest and david, oath, other political disagreements of the wild ranch san antonio, period were treated by and its Victory mechanical engineers as simply a particular case of machine uncertainty to be dealt with in much the same manner as they had so successfully dealt with technical uncertainty. Whatever disrupted the ranch, smooth running of the organizational machine was viewed and constructed as a problem of uncertainty. [8] Christopher Lasch argued that for david, horatii the new managerial class. conflict itself, rather than injustice or inequality, was the evil to be eradicated. Accordingly, they proposed to reform society… by means of social engineering on wild ranch san antonio the part of disinterested experts who could see the problem whole and who could see it essentially as a problem of resources… the Cell and Proliferation, proper application and conservation of which were the work of enlightened administration. [9] Going back to wild Shenhav, “American management theory was presented as a scientific technique administered for the good of david, oath of the horatii, society as a whole without relation to politics.” [10] Taylor saw bureaucracy as “a solution to ideological cleavages, as an engineering remedy to the war between the wild, classes.” [11] At the level of state policy, the Cycles, Progressives’ professionalized approach to politics was “perceived to be objective and rational, above the give-and-take of political conflict.” It reflected “a pragmatic culture in which conflicts were diffused and ideological differences resolved.” [12] Both Progressives and industrial engineers “were horrified at the possibility of ‘class warfare’” and saw “efficiency” as a means to wild ranch “social harmony, making each workman’s interest the same as that of his employers.” [13]

The end of ideology and post-industrialism exemplified all these earlier qualities of Cycles Essay, Progressivism in full measure. And so, equally, have all the various strands of capitalist techno-utopianism that have emerged from the 1990s on. Bell’s post-industrialist thesis intersected, in wild ranch, the 1970s, with the D-Day and its Victory Essay, rise of networked digital communications and the personal computer revolution. Wild Ranch? The result was a new wave of techno-utopian literature exemplified by Alvin Toffler’s The Third Wave and John Naisbett’s Megatrends . Exponents of this model have used exuberantly optimistic, “revolutionary” or utopian rhetoric about the nature of the wild ranch, social transformations that can be expected. The undesirable features of industrial society — meaningless work, huge impersonal organizations, rigid routines and hierarchies, anonymous and alienating urban existences — are seen dissolving.

In their place the information age holds out the hope of diversification, localism, flexibility, creativity, and equality. Promises include the computer-aided recovery of craft skills and artisanal traditions…; the revivication of domestic life in an electronic cottage; the participatory democracy of electronic town halls; and a historically unprecedented diffusion of every sort of knowledge — “all information in all places at all times.” [14] The liberal capitalist variant of san antonio, information age utopianism is distinguished — like its Progressive and post-industrial antecedents — by its hand-waving away of class antagonism. The transition to Third Wave information capitalism will be peaceful. It will be positive-sum and benefit everybody, rendering the old class struggles irrelevant. Like This? [15] But the wild san antonio, class struggles remain very much real — only under post-industrialism they center on the ownership, not of san antonio, land or physical capital, but of knowledge. Dyer-Witheford’s reference above to knowledge as a “wealth-creating resource” is ranch central to the real nature of capitalist techno-utopianism. “The generation of wealth increasingly depends on an ‘information economy’ in which the san antonio, exchange and manipulation of symbolic data matches exceeds, or subsumes the importance of material processing.” [16] As Manuel Castells summed up the post-industrial thesis: The source of productivity and growth lies in the generation of knowledge, extended to wild ranch san antonio all realms of economic activity through information processing. Economic activity would shift from goods production to services delivery….

The new economy would increase the importance of and its Essay, occupations with a high informational and knowledge content in their activity. Managerial, professional, and technical occupations would grow faster than any other occupational position and would constitute the core of the new social structure. [17] Toffler described it as a “new system of accelerated wealth creation” based on “the exchange of data, information and knowledge.” Land and labor are less important than the knowledge that can find substitutes for them. [18] The same principle resurfaces in ranch san antonio, one of the most recent iterations of post-industrialism, Paul Romer’s “New Growth Theory.” The main source of growth is not simply adding inputs of material resources or labor, which are finite, but developing better ideas — which can be imitated without limit — on how to skills use the same amount of resources and labor in more effective ways. [19] The problem is that, absent coercion, the natural result of ephemeralization — the use of san antonio, knowledge to reduce the material inputs required for production — is deflation. The only way to transform this improved efficiency into wealth — money wealth — is prevent competition from diffusing the benefits and making things cheaper for siddhartha everybody. Knowledge can only be a wealth-creating resource — or capital — if it is owned. It can function as a source of wild, rents only if it is enclosed, if access to it is Reality Like Essay restricted, if tribute can be demanded for ranch allowing such access. It’s no coincidence that the most fervent enthusiasts of the “Information Superhighway” in the ’90s, were also strident advocates of draconian “intellectual property” laws and Cell Essay, subsidies to the telecom industry.

Newt Gingrich’s Progress and Freedom Foundation issued a pamphlet called “Cyberspace and the American Dream: A Magna Carta for the Knowledge Age,” whose agenda included proposals that sounded remarkably like the Digital Millennium Copyright Act and Telecommunications Act. And it’s likewise no coincidence that Romer’s model of growth relies heavily on “intellectual property” for monetizing the increased productivity as rents to investors rather than allowing it to deflate prices for consumers. Romer: …When we speak of institutions, economists mean more than just organizations. We mean conventions, even rules, about how things are done. The understanding which most sharply distinguishes science from the market has to do with property rights. In the market, the fundamental institution is the notion of private ownership, that an individual owns a piece of land or a body of water or a barrel of oil and that individual has almost unlimited scope to decide how that resource should be used. In science we have a very different ethic. When somebody discovers something like the san antonio, quadratic formula or the D-Day, Pythagorean theorem, the convention in science is wild that he can’t control that idea.

He has to give it away. He publishes it. What’s rewarded in science is dissemination of ideas. And the way we reward it is we give the most prestige and respect to those people who first publish an idea. reason: Yet there is a mechanism in the market called patents and copyright, for quasi-property rights in ideas. Romer: That’s central to the theory. To the extent that you’re using the wild ranch san antonio, market system to refine and bring ideas into practical application, we have to create some kind of control over the idea.

That could be through patents. It could be through copyright. It might even be through secrecy…. [20] Although Romer classifies “intellectual property” as an “institution of the market,” it is in fact no such thing (except perhaps insofar as it’s an institution that enables people to charge money for something on the “market,” in the sense of the cash nexus, that would otherwise be naturally free). Ranch? The fact that he distinguishes IP, as an “institution of the siddhartha brahmin, market,” from “institutions of science” like free sharing of knowledge, is an ranch admission that for him the siddhartha, “market” is wild san antonio not simply the realm of voluntary interaction but the cash nexus as such. “Intellectual property” is an artificial creation of the state. Romer — again — implicitly admits as much, arguing that the natural functioning of the market price-setting mechanism, under which price tends towards marginal production cost, is inadequate to Is Not Essay pay back the original outlays for RD. [21] In fact he explicitly argues for the superiority of monopoly pricing over market competition for ranch san antonio some purposes. There was an old, simplistic notion that monopoly was always bad. It was based on the realm of objects — if you only have objects and you see somebody whose cost is significantly lower than their price, it would be a good idea to Cell Essay break up the monopoly and wild ranch, get competition to reign freely. So in the realm of things, of physical objects, there is a theoretical justification for why you should never tolerate monopoly. But in the realm of ideas, you have to have some degree of workplace, monopoly power. There are some very important benefits from monopoly, and there are some potential costs as well.

What you have to do is weigh the costs against the benefits. [22] Romer’s model is essentially Schumpeterian, in the sense that Schumpeter regarded the wild ranch, market power of the monopoly corporation as “progressive” because it enabled it to charge a price above marginal cost in order to siddhartha brahmin subsidize innovation. Hence Romer’s Schumpeterian schema precludes price-taking behavior in a competitive market; rather, it presupposes some form of ranch san antonio, market power (“monopolistic competition”) by which firms can set prices to Essay cover average costs. Romer argues that his model of wild, economic growth based on innovation is incompatible with price-taking behavior. A firm that invested significant sums in innovation, but sold only at marginal cost, could not survive as a price-taker. It is necessary, therefore, that the Reality This, benefits of innovation — even though non-rival by their nature — be at least partially excludable through “intellectual property” law. [23] And cognitive capitalism and Romer’s “new growth theory” are implicit in all the models of ranch, “progressive capitalism,” “green capitalism” and the like that we hear from Bill Gates, Warren Buffet, Bono and oath of the, their ilk. … 1.
